ATI Drivers In Kernel?
After a bout of Male Mentelpause I have lost my config file and kernel I was using on X1000. I have re-installed Mint 11 using the 3.5.7 kernel and need to build another custom kernel. I want to try 3.14.2 first but have forgotten which graphics firmware needs to be built into the kernel for boot and run.
I have a HD6850 and know the 4 BARTS and the BTC firmware need to be compiled in but there is also 1 or 2 more (I think) necessary to prevent the long wait at startup at .....returning from PROMint.
Any idea?

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
3.14 is an old kernel. You could use the 3.17 or 3.18 kernel. The Radeon drivers are compiled in these kernels. In these packages are the kernel configs too. In these configs you can see which firmware files are required for your HD6850 (BARTS).mechanic wrote:ATI Drivers In Kernel?

Boot with the kernel you want to rebuild and enter the following in a terminal:mechanic wrote:ATI Drivers In Kernel?

zcat /proc/config.gz >cur_config
Then load (or rename to .config) the file cur_config.
For that card the files you need are:I have a HD6850 and know the 4 BARTS and the BTC firmware need to be compiled in but there is also 1 or 2 more (I think) necessary to prevent the long wait at startup at .....returning from PROMint.

BARTS_mc.bin
BARTS_me.bin
BARTS_pfp.bin
BTC_rlc.bin (This one is the common interrupt driver for Barts Turks and Caicos cards)
and depending on which kernel you intend to use you may also need:
BARTS_smc.bin
Note these names are case sensitive!

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
Thanks Darren,
The problem is I don't have the 3.10 kernel to extract from. Pfft! Gone.
I'm able to build the other kernels, and they work, but they all take a long time waiting at "returning from prom_int" . So I'm either missing something or have forgotten something, or perhaps maybe it's the compiler(???).
I'll keep at it.

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
Problem solved.
All that is needed is to rip half the stuff out of the kernel.

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
I could host your small kernels if you like. I think there are some people who are interested in small kernels.mechanic wrote:Problem solved.

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
The problem with that is my kernel is only for the extra equipment in my computer. If they have a different video card, or two video cards, or are using a different sound card then they would be in trouble.
What is really needed is to get more people building kernels. They don't have to be experts, and as long as they don't replace the running kernel & modules with something of the same name.....then it's okay to screw up a new kernel, trash it, and try again.
I think you are doing a wonderful job with kernel development and for you to get side tracked with building custom kernels, or trying to answer questions about them would be a shame.
I just wish people would be less afraid of crashing a computer in the persuit of knowledge.
It ain't like crashing a car.

Re: ATI Drivers In Kernel?
Just for your amusement I attached my 3.14.2 Makefile from the 3.14.2 source code firmware directory. You might be interested in the Make modules_install part near the top.
Notice all the # marks?
I'm not sure how much more can be safely removed.
It's all fun
I would post my config file but it's 9k too big for this forum,,,,, besides, it would probably give you a heart attack.

You're right.mechanic wrote: What is really needed is to get more people building kernels.
Thank you! My pleasure! But there are a lot of people in the background, who work day by day for the Linux support for all A-EON AMIGA ones. Thank you to Alex Perez, Pat Wall, Darren Stevens, and Trevor Dickinson for the great work in the background.mechanic wrote: I think you are doing a wonderful job with kernel development and for you to get side tracked with building custom kernels, or trying to answer questions about them would be a shame.
