Linux HD7xxx Status

Post by daz »

Hi Everyone,

If you've been following Trevor's blog you will know that work is being carried out to support HD7xxx cards under Linux. Here is a brief status report.

The latest kernels 3.8.7 and 3.9.0 will work with these cards IF the correct firmware has been compiled in.

For HD7750/7770 thats VERDE_rlc.bin VERDE_pfp.bin VERDE_me.bin VERDE_ce.bin VERDE_mc.bin
(Note HD7790 in a new chip and needs a new firmware.)

For HD7850/7870 thats PITCAIRN_rlc.bin etc

For HD7950/7970 Use TAHITI

The varsion of Xorg drivers supplied with current distributions (6.14) doesn't recognise these cards causing the xserver to fall back to the fbdev driver. This has a maximum resolution of 768 x 1024, so I've compiled 7.1 which will work better.

3D is causing a few problems, Currently I have the driver (radeonsi) compiled, but it won't start due to no dri on my 7750 card. Investigations are continuing.

Here is a link to the updated xorg drivers if you wish to test them:

http://www.fileden.com/files/2012/6/20/ ... eon710.zip

Notes:
Copy to /usr/xorg/modules/drivers/ as root

Copying radeon_drv.so will cause the xserver to restart!

There is no real need to use these unless you are using a HD7000 series card.

Regards
Darren

Hi All,

Seems 'Fileden.com' the cloud services provider I was using has suffered a complete disk failure and lost all the files I had stored there. Here is a new link to a (hopefully more reliable) copy of the xorg drivers.

Darren

I guess I better ask

How do we get this "new firmware" for the 7970 card? :ugeek:

and, will it make it into the upcoming CD release? 8-)

Thanks for all your hard work Daz!

Hi Slayer,

You need the firmware package: https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware. After the installation you have to add some firmwares to the kernel config. Some radeon firmwares were added to the Kernel 3.10.0. For example for your 7970 card. :)

Best wishes,

Christian
