CMI8738-based PCIe sound card

Postby aperezbios » Wed Aug 20, 2014 12:39 am

I was just perusing the AmigaOS sound card HCL, and noticed that there was at least one instance of a CMI8738-based sound card with a PCIe bridge in front of it. Super cheap on eBay, $11 from a seller in china (shipped) http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-PCI-Express-PCI-E-5-1ch-6channels-CMI8738-chipset-Sound-Card-freelow-profile-/171423500483?pt=US_Sound_Cards_Internal_&hash=item27e9a308c3 or $15 from at least one US-based seller (see http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-Express-PCI-E-x1-32-bit-5-1CH-6-Channel-CMI8738-3D-Audio-Digital-Sound-Card-/361021434029?pt=US_Sound_Cards_Internal_&hash=item540e8de8ad

Has anyone ever tried this card with OS4 on an X1000, by chance?

Is there an advantage to using this over the built in sound of the X1000?

Certainly there is. Without it, the PCI-e bus connector is likely to be left open, gathering dust and corrosion on the contacts.

I think the temporary sound card that came with my X1000 was CMI8738-based. It had a click when a sound started playing or a tiny bit of the beginning of a sound was cut. I replaced it with a SoundBlaster card that eliminated the problem and had better fidelity. It is also the same chip that was built into my µA1 and had a click until the driver was updated. I don't know if the specific card you mentioned works in an X1000 but I suppose you can't go wrong for $11. My SoundBlaster cost $8 and was one of the soundest investments I've ever made :-)

Then fill it with a Sil3114 and hang a large drive off it for backups. I thought the onboard sound was quite good myself. I also filled a slot with a USB 3.0 card for use in Ubuntu.
