DvPlayer to play movie DVDs?

For the 1st time I put a movie DVD in my SAMSUNG Super Writemaster SpeedPlus. I started AmiDVD. I dragged the DVD icon onto AmiDVD and at the bottom it said unrecognized movie format. I tried using the OPEN DVD menu item. That hung AmiDVD and slowed down other operations. I had to reboot.

I took that very DVD over to my wife's circa 2002 iBook and that DVD played beautifully.

What am I missing? [*** I am missing that it is NOT a DVD Player ***]

AmiDVD is a DVD burner, guessing you mean MUI-Mplayer. Open MUI-Mplayer prefs & change "video driver" to cgx_wpa & "audio driver" to ahi_dev. Make sure "dvd device" is set right. Even if setup right, a lot of DVDs won't play because of copy protection, don't expect it to work like the iBook.

Heh. *Just* a burner, eh?
Thanks for being gentle.
The only thing I have used mplayer for is internet radio. I'll try those settings you suggested.
I'll go get the lha and give that a go.

More cluefully yours,

I downloaded. Put it in the plugin folder. Rebooted. Put the Movie in the DVD reader. Double clicked DvPlayer. Chose Play DVD from the menu. After a good bit of time the opening showed, supposedly giving me 4 options : Play Movie, Selected Scenes, Special, and (one other I don't remember). I highlighted Special and left mouse "clicked". You'd swear I started things all over from the beginning.

Suddenly about 15 extremely fast cut shots (stills?) appeared and disappeared in less than 2 seconds, then the movie started to play. There was no sound. I left mouse clicked on Media Properties and it said "No Sound".

That is not true. My wife and I watched the movie (Fargo) last night absolutely flawlessly for 1 hour and 38 minutes.

I tried to bring Dvplayer to a halt. Maybe I don't wait long enough for a response, but I gave up and rebooted, removing the DVD as that went on.

I gotta leave, but I'll be a little more specific later this evening. Maybe the "Mixer" is getting in the way? Maybe the new sound driver is getting in the way, maybe, maybe, maybe!

@ggw
from the DVPlayer manual:
DvPlayer requires avcodec.library 51.52 or higher. You must download and install it also.
On the DvPlayer website you will find information on where to obtain the latest version of
avcodec.library from.
That "could" fix your "No sound" problem

I get these "fast short cuts of images" too.
I learned that this is because the DVD Menues seems to be not supported (yet?) due to copyright problems with the needed support library.

Maybe Stephen (Fellner) can shed some light on this.

Anyway, i can watch movies quite great on AmigaOS4 (if they are not HD, that is)...every DVD works here

for your conveniance, here are my plugin and library versions:
dvdcd.plugin 51.2 (18.04.2006) (from DVPlayer/dvplugins)
avcodec.library 53.611 Build #2B07 (13.05.2012) from LIBS:

Here's a hint: DvPlayer doesn't actually support DVD menus, rather it can only play video chapters... some of which are actually used for menus. So the menus will not respond any more than clicking on a normal video will. You will need to skip chapters to find where they decided to put the movie/etc.

MPlayer DOES support menus (IIRC), but I found it rather slower & tended to crash in the menus... (DvPlayer is faster but does not support menus, so horses for courses.)

dvdcd.plugin 51.2 (18.04.2006) (from DVPlayer/dvplugins)
avcodec.library 53.611 Build #2B07 (13.05.2012) from LIBS:
Adding those 2 libraries allows DVPlayer to play all the movies we have here at the house.

How /should/ it be so that those libraries would be part of an Amiupdate?
Such a thing would surely reduce the # of threads (and aggravation) about this topic.
Those 2 libraries could hardly be called "optional", can they?

I'm not sure what Stephen's (Fellner) plans are for the next version, but i'm with you here.
Would make life easier to not gather them from different places

Everyone should know by now things in the programming world are not that simple. There are generally reasons why some things can't travel together like but not limited too:

size considerations
author consent
country legislation
license criteria
developer discretion ;)

could all authors provide links to useful addons or make the information more readily available, sure, but all this kind of thing takes time and will still miss out people... it is what it is and it's not horrible since this is WHY we have FORUMS
to fill in the BLANKS! Otherwise our forums would be dead quiet eh ;)
