Audioevolution4 looks good, and it is free. Excellent.
A small donation shall be forthcoming if it works well.

Audio Evolution 4, HD-Rec and SoundFX all can be had for free these days, I believe. We are very blessed! Tonight, I hope to get back to figuring out why my levels are so hot...

In SoundFX, there is a gain slider among the AHI settings that goes from 1.0 to 100. Even slammed to the left at 1.0 the incoming signal on the blue line level input is still way too hot. But when I press the "auto" button to the right of this slider the value keeps dropping all the way down to -271. At this point the incoming level is low enough to get a clean recording.

And I am thinking (but too tired to verify at the moment) that at this point that leaves AHI in a state so that I can make a clean recording in AHIRecord as well. That would explain my one success mentioned above.

But reboot and it's back to the super high, overdriven input level.

Just can't figure out what else to try from this end. But I am certainly open to the possibility that I am going wrong somewhere.

@mbrantley
Does the "AHI Preferences/Advanced Settings/Volume Scaling" make any difference? Maybe that's only an output setting but it might be worth trying.

The driver is distributed by AmiUpdate.

The problem with input gain has been confirmed and a fix is in progress.

Thanks for your hard work. One question: Do the AHI mode settings (16 bit, 32 bit) affect the input mode? In other words, is the input always 16bit or is it 32bit when a 32 bit mode is set in AHI?

The recording mode is always set to 16 bit. The reason is these bits of document from the AHI developers archive:
"bit AHISB_RECORD in flags is set"
...
"The format should always be AHIST_S16S"
...
"The message should be filled as follows:
ahirm_Type - Set to AHIST_S16S.
ahirm_Buffer - A pointer to the filled buffer.
ahirm_Samples - How many sample frames stored."

It may be possible to feed it something else, but I tend to follow the rules when the documents are that specific.

I activated AmiUpdate and got around 20 updates. None of them seemed to have anything to do with audio.
Where do I find the existing "driver" so I can look at its install date and the version #?

I'll look into why AmiUpdate isn't running automatically. I thought I had set it up that way... recently?
