Hi,
I recently bought a SSD to replace my old SATA drive. I am able to setup the drive and install AmigaOS 4.1Fe onto it fine but can not get it to boot.
The boot flag is set for the System partition. It is also using the same SATA connection on the motherboard as the working drive did.
When I try and boot, I get the following messages:
Loader:elf Filesys:amigafs Dev:ide0.0 File:amigaboot.of Options:(null)
Loading: Failed.
Could not load ide0.0:amigaboot.of: Unsupported function

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: New install on SSD problems
Did you create a small BOOT: partition containing amigaboot.of and using FFS as filesystem?
Which filesystem did you use for your system partition?
Best regards,
Niels

@prowler
Just as nbache said
1) Create a small partition at the very first one on your SSD (i'm using the smallest possible size - which is 1 MB - as the "amigaboot.of" file is roughly just 62 kb)
2) Use "Standard filesystem" (Fast File System)
3) Use "Long filenames"
4) Blocksize "should" be 512 (i'm using 4096 since years now without any problems)
5) Buffers 128 (because it's so small and 128 is the lowest iirc)
6) Maxtransfer: FFFFFFFF
7) Mask: 7FFFFFFF
I'm using these numbers with my 512 GB Samsung 850 Evo since ages now and they work great
8) Give it a name, i called it "BootOF"
You need to automount it for copying the "amigaboot.of" to it, but afterwards, once your system starts you can uncheck that again, it will still be available to the system, but hidden on WB (saves accidently writing to it)
Now reboot with your boot CD, prepare the rest of your HDD, copy "amigaboot.of" to your BootOF partition, install AmigaOS and restart

Is this a limitation of AmigaOS or CFE?
And if it is CFE, could this be rectified through an update to CFE?
(iirc i read a long time ago that CFE only understands FFS, is that the case)

CFE. AmigaOS isn't even awake at that point.Raziel wrote:Regarding the need of FFS for the "amigaboot.of" partition...

Theoretically, it could. But I personally don't expect that to happen. For this little task, FFS does the job fine. And it would add both size and complexity to CFE to make it understand additional filesystems. Finally, for the later models, CFE is out again, and UBoot back in.And if it is CFE, could this be rectified through an update to CFE?
FFS is the only Amiga FS it understands. I believe it also understands FAT(32) and maybe ext2/3?(iirc i read a long time ago that CFE only understands FFS, is that the case)

Niels

It's a bit late but thanks for the replies. Things have been a bit crazy and this is the first time I have had a chance to try what was suggested here due to the whole real life thing.
@Raziel
Step 1 was the part I was missing.

Re: New install on SSD problems
to spice things up a bit,
Isn't it possible to put the amigaboot.of on the CF-Card anymore?
I surely do not have a boot partition other than the AmigaOS4.1 and I have this variable set in UBoot:
MENU_0_COMMAND=setenv amigaboot_quiet Y ; boot -fs=fat cf0:amigaboot.of
so it is booting the amigaboot.of from a CompactFlash card formatted with the FAT File System..

Re: New install on SSD problems
I completely forgot about the CFCard. I have one in the system for dual booting with Linux. For some reason it was unplugged. I copied the amigaboot.of to it and updated the CFE menu item and it works fine. Thanks.to spice things up a bit,

Re: New install on SSD problems
Well, my joy at having my X1000 booting off the SSD and getting to play with it over the Easter long weekend was short lived.
All I get now when I power the X1000 on is a black screen with a flashing line cursor in the top left of the screen.
* I checked all cabling
* Replaced the battery
* Tried clearing CMOS with jumper 11
* Even tried booting from rescue BIOS
I can see LEDs 3, 4 and 5 are lit on the mother board.
Googling has not really uncovered anything of use and I am now currently out of ideas.

Re: New install on SSD problems
When you "updated the CFE menu item", did you remember to include the "-p" option on the command line, so that the new content was saved? Otherwise it would have lasted only for that boot.
PS: Where are you in Oz?
