Neil, do you realise that Microsoft didn't do any discount for people that bought WinME to upgrade to Win2000 and to people that bought Vista to upgrade to Win7? And I am talking about a multi-million dollar company that could certainly do such discounts without closing its doors.
Also I am sure Hyperion has not the same kind of bank account as Microsoft.

Are you also saying that WinME and Win2000 were unsuitable as an OS when it was released?
In the way Classic OS4.0 (ZERO) was - as that's about what it was worth.

I don't think you are, as both products worked pretty much as intended, even though they were released only a short time after one another, but some of the OS had changed within the Windows OS that I suppose warranted the update. I only ever had WinME, and that worked OK when I used it, and had regular updates, free of charge, but changing to another version of the OS would have been a different situation, and I would have expected to pay for it.

Did you ever buy, and try to use Classic OS4.0? It was full of problems when it was released, and never really got out of that situation. It really is the worst Amiga Workbench OS I have ever bought, and the ONLY ONE I REGRET BUYING, and there really should be an upgrade or trade-in discount for it.

While I understand the point you are making (and constantly repeating it won't make it any more relevent), these are product support forums, and as such are for the support of current products.

It is unfortunate that you feel your purchase was regrettable, but that is now in the past, AmigaOS 4.1 is now the current line for support, and as such is on topic here.

You've made your views known, now I would appreciate it if we can get back to supporting current products.

@Rigo

Although, I'm with you in some sense, I can understand Neil_P, too.
Especially, as this part of the Forum is called
"AmigaOS 4.x Support ‹ Platform: Classic" and thus,
concerns about AmigaOS4.0 classic are valid.

The question maybe is: Will there be support/bug fixes to AmigaOS4.0
or has the support been dropped since AmigaOS4.1 was released?

@Neil_P

Since AOS4.1 is already out for classic users and there was no discount
in the beginning, a discount couldn't be given right now because it'd be
not fair to those who bought AOS4.1 already.

Actually, even if AOS4.0 was not perfect, I used it regularly and rarely booted
into AOS3.9 since AOS4.0 for my A4000 was available. So, it seems not all
classic users had the same feeling/problems as you had.

The question that you have to answer for yourself then is, if you want to further support
AOS4 for classic Amigas in spite of your bad experiences with AOS4.0 or not.
From my opinion, AOS4.1 classic seems to be very worthwhile to support but you have to
make your own decision. However, I doubt there will be any discount or price drop in
the foreseeable future. So, no reason to wait for it. There will be no discount.

In my case, I upgraded to a NG machine a while ago already and sold my A4000
(only because of the need for money). However, I sometimes regret it because
I really liked my classic and also AOS4.0 classic, and simply, because it'd be
somehow pretty cool to run AOS4.1 now on such a glory machine from the
past.

nexus

I guess you haven't used Windows ME (Millenium Edition) if you have to ask. We had it installed here for a short while but after we noticed what a buggy piece of shit it was we instantly upgraded back to Windows 98SE. As for Windows 2000 I never used it that much, had a pretty slow boot time as far as I remember (went from straight from 98SE -> XP).

Well Neil_P, I brought OS4.0 for my A4000 PPC computer and used it every day right up until I brought my first SAM when it was released. I never had any problems with it. I brought my first Amiga in late 1985, perhaps I just knew the Amiga a bit better, who knows.

I really don't understand it when I hear people rat out what I thought was a fine upgrade... I played videos, even a few games, heck, I even ran fusion and MacOS 7.5.5 to run Warlords2, I compiled source code and painted, ray traced on Imagine and also word processed etc...

Please don't say I was just a lucky one :D

btw:

You have to understand some of us old school characters do not appreciate this clinical outlook especially from todays society... The Amiga is a Passion for alot of us and we'll take whatever we need to take right square on the chin and just keep on going, simply shrugging it off... You on the other hand can be quite positive in one thread discussing a technical matter and then in another thread (this one) really turn it up because you want your moneys worth... sorry, but I can't relate to that and never will... you're either for the Amiga (during the lows as well as highs) or you're just a computer user and that's like, rock bottom as far as I'm concerned... 8-)

take it easy

Hello to everyone.

@Neil_P: try to sell OS4.0, so the price for OS4.1 isn't that much. ;)

@Neil_P:

Why don't you outline the individual issues that you remember that you had with Amiga OS 4.0 and see if the beta testers and new users can tell you what things have improved in Amiga OS 4.1 Classic in those areas. The complaints that I have heard were mainly due to needing a graphics card for good performance or not being able to use certain devices under OS 4.0 .

If you do, please open a new thread for that, this is hardly the topic to discuss anything of that nature.

Locking this thread.
