ppp-ethernet.device issue

Post by kas1e »

Hi all os4 developers ! Dunno if my issues related to pegasos2 only, or its general problem, but just in case i put it in general forum.

So, In the last 2 years with 4.1 / update1 / update2 i have an always-reproducable issue with ppp-ethernet.device when i use D-Link 2500U modem directly (i.e. via Dialers and co) on my peg2. For any users who will want to answer in that topic, like "use router" - yes, my current workoround its just i use static ips + some route + winxp as main machine for connect to internet (via the same D-Link 2500U), but as bug is still here, i still it worth to report. I also report that on Aw.net few times, and one time directly to Olsen , but i do not know if it was approved, and if it already in the bug-report base, and if Olsen read it at all.

To reproduce:

That, how looks like my internet connection script:
# PROGDIR:Connections/inet.conn
# File generated by Dialer 53.2 (3.10.2009)
# On Среда, 24-Мар-10 at 14:08:28
interface="PPPoE"
device="via-rhine.device"
pppoe=yes
service="inet"
sendid=off
login="szt"
password="A23C067503ED3DA12880A427914F0FD7"
provider="inet"
It called "inet.conn", and have "inet.conn.info", in which:

Default tool: System:Internet/Dialer
Stack size: 32.768
Tool types: MODE=OPEN

Nextly, i click on that icon, it connects, spawn me information window (how many bytes are transfered, activity and so on). All looks fine at that stage, so, i trying to use internet. Run OWB, go to some site - all is fine. Press on some topic, all is fine. Then go to some other site and have crash in the ppp-ethernet.device. Crash always the same, with the same DSI and crashlog, and happens always after 2-5 minuts of internet usage after connection is happens.

I tryed to save all the possible info from. For first i show you screenshot of how looks dialer-info window, GR and memguard/shashimi output at one time: here is that screenshot.

For second, i show you information about that DSL modem (d-link 2500u) which i grab as screenshot when point browser on DSL and get main statistic about (maybe it will helps too): here is that screenshot.

And the last, and the most important, classic GR log:

Please, take a look at this, and i can help with all possibly testings and so on. You also can send me debug version of ppp-ethernet.device and can grab GR with normal offsets.

Maybe its all of course in the internal bug-tracker already, but maybe not. So i think its worth to mention one more time here.

Hi,

If I look at this page about the Dlink 2500U, it says it is a modem-router so, AFAIK it must not be used with Dialer. :? I mean Dialer should be used with modem devices like this one.

As it already works with this device (and i can connect to internet and use it for a while), and the big part of russia use those modems as default on their winxp/linux/macintoshes by plain and the same by logic "dialers", i assume the bug still should be fixed (By GR it looks like some NULL-Pointer access). I mean if device already start to works, and crashes after a while - then it can works, just crashes because of some bug in ppp-ethernet.device. If ppp-ethernet.device not support something, then just need to skip it from the code , and if it just some broken handling of something, then need to fix the code itself. Anyone from os4developer team can build debug version of ppp-ethernet.device, and i can found by addr2line the code where it crashes.

This looks like a standard one port ADSL modem router connected by Ethernet? If that is the case the Dialer certainly should not be used! Unless you speciifcally need to dial in to it. But the modem should contain your user/pass needed for ADSL connection and connect to the computer using a simple Ethernet setup with DHCP. Does it work if you try setting it up as a LAN connection from the Wizard?

Or do you actually need PPPoE? But I agree a crash shouldn't happen. Even with an invalld setup.

I already found some workorounds which works. But the post its exactly about "crash should not happens at all even in anvalid setup" (while its not invalid setup, its the same as i use the same modem on winxp/linux, with their dialer kind programms). So its more not like "how to make my modem works without using a dialer", but "aos4 component have some bug which need to fix to make aos4 better and working in all possible variants for end users".

@elwood
Can you please fill bug-report on bugzilla with all the info i provide ? (or you already did ?)

@kas1e

I see your point. I missed making a point that in both a valid and invalid setup it shouldn't crash. But I haven't used PPPoE myself so can see now why the Dialer is needed, The a1serial.device is also suspect as this can drop out after a few minutes. I wonder if this is all related to Roadhow internals.

Examing the log the PPP device task was calling an Exec function (module kernel) and it looks like it was manipulating a node. Or rather lack thereof. :-)
